Applegreen to nearly double EV charging footprint in New York this year

Permission granted by Applegreen

Dive Brief:

  • Applegreen has revealed plans to reach at least 70 electric vehicle chargers across its c-store network in New York by the end of the year, which would nearly double its current count of 41 in the state, a company spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday.
  • The retailer’s EV charging expansion is part of a $450 million private investment to redevelop and modernize all 27 New York State Thruway service areas, according to a March 25 announcement from the Thruway Authority. No toll or tax dollars are being used for construction of these sites.
  • Applegreen’s spokesperson said the c-store retailer will have a convenience store at all 27 remodeled Thruway locations, while the 70 EV chargers will span 13 of its locations in the state.

Dive Insight:

As part of this project, Applegreen will install at least four universal fast charging stations — also known as Level 3 chargers — that offer up to 350 kilowatts of power at every remodeled service area, according to the Thruway Authority’s announcement.

Applegreen’s spokesperson confirmed that all of the retailer’s charging stations in New York are currently Level 3 chargers.

On a broader scale, the Thruway Authority plans to create an end-to-end corridor of more than 130 fast charging EV stations with an average of 30 miles between each location by the end of this project.

So far, 15 of the 27 Thruway locations have reopened. Besides c-stores and charging stations, many of Applegreen’s locations include new restaurant concepts, outdoor seating, food trucks, playgrounds and pet walking areas, among other things.

In 2021, Dublin, Ireland-based Applegreen launched Applegreen Electric, its EV charging network. Most Applegreen Electric charging stations are in Ireland and the UK, while some are scattered across the Northeastern U.S.

Applegreen has over 200 convenience stores and travel plazas across 15 U.S. states. According to the company’s website, it has roughly 30 locations in New York.
